Torma: The Ancient Art of Tibetan Butter Sculpture will be the first feature-length documentary about the sacred ritual art of tormas. It will cover their complex history, rich symbolism, and important function in the practice of Tibetan Buddhism while focusing on the personal story and artistic creations of the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. As visionary head of the Karma Kagyu, His Holiness has transformed the torma display at the Kagyu Monlam held annually in Bodhgaya, India and is establishing a new torma tradition in his lineage.

“As a child in Tibet, I was aware that the
torma tradition in the Karma Kagyu monasteries
in India needed to flourish. I had a vision of new
and beautiful tormas [with elaborate scenes] of
Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. This experience has
inspired me to revive the older traditions and
create a new one.”
